Anti-Reflective (AR) Coatings
Anti-reflective coating (also called “AR Coating”, “Anti-Glare Coating” or “No Glare”) is a multilayer coating that enhances vision, reduces eye strain and improves the appearance of eyeglasses by virtually eliminating the reflections from the front and back surface of the lenses. By reducing the reflections, more light passes through the lens improving visual acuity while making the lenses nearly invisible.
AR coating is especially beneficial on high-index lenses due to the fact that the higher the index of refraction the more light reflections there will be. Plastic lenses reflect approximately 8% of light (only 92% of light passes through) where as high index lenses reflect approximately 12% thus allowing even less light for vision.
Most premium AR coatings include additional layers making the lens easier to clean. These layers are hydrophobic (repels water) and/or oleophobic (repels oil). When applied to photochromic lenses, AR coating enhances vision in all light conditions without reducing performance. AR coating is also good for polarized sunglasses. When applied to the back surface of the sunglass lens it eliminates sunlight from reflecting into your eyes when the sun is behind you.Anti-Reflective coating provides better vision for night time driving as well as increased comfort for those who spend long hours reading or using the computer.
Never clean your lenses dry. Always rinse your lenses with warm, soapy water prior to wiping them to prevent unwanted scratches. Clean your lenses using a microfiber cloth. Paper towels, shirts, ties etc. can damage the lens.
Another advantage of anti-reflective coating is the cosmetics. When your lenses have AR coating applied you “look” better to others because the reflections are eliminated thus increasing the visibility of your eyes. Enhanced eye contact is ideal for those in the public eye such as speakers, reporters or teachers.
